How can I work around Photoshop Elements 7's inability to open JPG files from my Android phone?

Question

I copied some photographs that I took with my Android phone to my laptop. When I tried to open them with Photoshop Elements 7.0, I received the following error message:

Could not complete your request because reading spatial lossless jpeg files is not implemented.

Is there a workaround for Photoshop Elements 7.0? If I upgraded to the latest version would it work then?

This question was previously asked at the Adobe forums with no responses currently.

Asked by Gdalya

Answer

The problem seems to be that I set up my phone to encrypt my SD card and when I pulled files to my PC, they came off still encrypted. A fuller discussion of this issue can be found on Android Enthusiasts Stack Exchange.

What should I do about Canon PowerShot “Lens error, restart camera”?

Question

I've had a Canon PowerShot A1100 IS camera for almost a year now.

About a week ago, I went on a trip, took pictures the whole trip, everything was ok.

When I got home, and tried to turn the camera to move the pictures to my PC, I got an error: "Lens error, restart camera"

The lens doesn't even start to open, doesn't make any sounds of trying even.

What can I do to fix this?

Answer

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.

I have written a blog post about some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 50% of lens errors, but they're worth a try.

How can I fix a “Cannot communicate with battery” error on Canon 7D?

Question

If I see the "cannot communicate with battery" error message on a Canon 7D, is there any way to fix it without sending it back to Canon?

Answer

A few things to try:

  • Try a second battery
  • Try a second body
  • Try OEM and third party batteries
  • Accept the warning message about the lack of communication and try to use the battery anyways
  • Try pulling the battery out and reseating it at least a few times
  • Try removing the tiny watch style battery as well as removing the regular battery at the same time. This will reset some if not all things on the camera, so keep that in mind.
  • Update your firmware to the newest version
  • Try a battery grip if you have one

This can come up for a variety of different reasons, typically it happens after the camera is dropped. If the camera was dropped, compressed in your luggage too tight, gathered a grain of sand while on the beach, or had a similar occurrence, you can find yourself with this error message. These cameras are mostly made of plastic, and it can even happen under regular use where nothing was done wrong.

Don't fret, you have options. Some people have luck with removing and replacing the batteries multiple times, so you could try that. But if you are still within the warranty period I would do that before taking more invasive measures such as giving the lens a nice hard bump. Head over to Canon's repair website here.

Why is my Nikon 50mm f/1.8 giving me an fEE error?

Question

I have a AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8. When I have the aperture setting on the lens to 22 I can take photos. But when I change the dial to anything other than 22(lowest f/stop) then I get a flashing fEE message and r09 where the number of exposure left is.

I don't have the manual for this lens but am just wondering if anyone knows what the issue is here.

My camera is a Nikon D70S.

Answer

Lenses with the aperture ring were originally designed for older SLR's which did not control aperture via the camera body.

Newer SLRs and DSLR control aperture via the body, so these older lenses must be stopped all the way down in order to be used. Your lens is working as it should, and is not defective.

To select aperture using your camera, ensure the aperture ring is set at 22 and shoot in either aperture (A) priority or manual and use the command dial and LCD screen to select the aperture you desire.
