Can I do exposure bracketing as a burst of shots on a Nikon D5000?

Question

Is it possible on Nikon D5000 to do AE bracketing in a burst?

Currently I've been able only to set bracketing mode but all three firings had to be done manually with the trigger button.

Answer

I believe you'll need to set the 'release mode' in your camera to 'Continuous' to get it to burst the three shots.
Also, reportedly, if your camera is on a self timer it will also take the three shots in a single button press after the time delay.

Is 2 megapixels enough for 4x6 prints?

Question

My compact camera has a burst mode, which shoots 10 fps at 2 megapixels.

I plan to use it at an upcoming company sporting event (basketball and tennis, outdoors) and plan to post memorable moments at our company bulletin board and boardroom. That is, print the photos uncropped at 4x6 inches. I have a class 10 SD card.

Do I need (to shop for) a "better" camera?

Answer

As a rough rule of thumb, photos tend to be printed at a maximum of 300 dots per inch (dpi), but anywhere from around 240dpi will produce a print that looks sharp when viewed closely. 300dpi means that every 1" × 1" square of print is actually made up of a grid of tiny dots, 300 dots along each side (and therefore 90,000 dots in total).

A digital camera's sensor also captures a grid of dots. The dots are known as pixels and 1 megapixel = 1,000,000 pixels.

We now have all we need to do a simple bit of maths. :)

A 6x4" print at an optimum resolution of 300dpi will be made up of (6 × 300) × (4 × 300) = 2,160,000 dots: just a touch over 2 megapixels. However, to print at a perfectly acceptable 240dpi we only need (6 × 240) × (4 × 240) = 1,382,400 pixels.

Result: a 2mp camera should produce great 6×4" prints!

Is burst rate higher in RAW mode?

Question

I own a Nikon D5000 and the Wikipedia page says that :

Continuous shooting 4 frame/s for 67 Large Fine JPEG or 11 RAW frames

Does this mean that keeping the camera in NEF (RAW) mode increases the frame rate?

Answer

The rate is 4 frames per second in either case. The difference is in how long it can keep it up — 67 JPEG files of the "large fine" quality level, or 11 RAW frames. That's because it can basically keep going as long as it has RAM to buffer the files, and has to slow down as soon as it has to actually start saving to relatively pokey flash memory. The limit is lower for RAW files simply because they're larger and consume more of the buffer.

There's some notes on this in dpreview's D5000 article, where they confirm the rate of 4.0 fps, and in their testing get 100 Large-Fine JPEGs and 11 RAW files. The difference in the number of JPEGs probably comes down to the compressiblity of their test scene. They also note a performance of 2.6 fps once the buffer is full (with either file type), and a limit of just five shots with RAW+JPEG. Turning on Active D-Lighting (which requires more processing per frame) also slows things down.
