Should I put UV filter to protect the lens even if I put a lens hood?

Question

That's pretty it, usually you buy a UV filter to protect the lens. My question is do I need the UV filter even if I'm using a lens hood?

Answer

The hood protects the lens of physical impact from knock and obstacles. It also reduces flare and keeps image quality to what the lens is capable of.

A UV filter protects against flying dangers such as sand, salt and other elements. While doing so a UV filter is detrimental to image quality as it adds additional reflections from another glass element in the optical path.

Therefore in most cases you should ONLY use the hood. If you are in proximity of sea-water splashing or flying sand, then you should but a UV filter too. Since flare can still be a problem, it is best to do both if you can.

Why are there different hood sizes for the same focal length lenses?

Question

While comparing the 85mm f/1.4G to the 85mm f/1.4D I noticed the lens hood size is noticeably larger on the new lens. You can see the difference down the page here

While I could understand a little difference, I would expect for them to be most effective, the same focal length would have roughly the same lens hood from lens to lens. Why the difference? Or are my eyes just fooling me because they're constructed a bit differently ?

Two reasons. The method of attachment is different, which accounts for the difference at the rear. The old hood screwed on to the filter thread, while the new one bayonets to the outside of the lens (and is thus reversible for storage).

That leads directly to the second reason: the old hood had to accommodate for the possibility that filters would be attached between the lens and the hood, so it couldn't be as long as it might otherwise have been without causing vignetting. Once you allow for a worst-case, but normal, filter stack (a polarizer and a colour correction or ND filter), there isn't a whole lot of difference in length between the two. On the newer lens, the filter stack would form a separate system inside the hood rather than being part of the hood system.

Should I consider any other hood for 1.8G 50mm rather than the default one?

The supplied lens hood with Nikon's 50mm f/1.8 G is HB-47 Bayonet Lens Hood, as mentioned on the tech specs for that lens.

Is it the best for this lens or should I look for a better one? If yes, then on what basis?

Answer

The supplied or purposely built hood is the safest to use on a lens.

While you can easily find a hood that fits the lens, getting one which works as well is a matter of luck. Even it a hood fits, it can still cause vignetting. I learned the hard way since two of my hoods have the same size :(

If you do not accidentally get one which a too narrow field of view, you may get one with a too wide field of view which affords less protection against flare than the specific hood which is made for your lens.

The one option to consider for physical protection is a retractable rubber hood which you can extend to protect and retract without removing it before shooting.

How do I properly position a lens hood?

I understand the basic idea of a lens hood, but after looking at mine and contemplating how to use it, I get stuck on the same question every time:

Does the orientation of the hood on the lens matter? Because the hood has peaks and valleys, so how do you know how to position it to reduce flare and distortions?

Or am I over thinking this, and it has no effect how its positioned on the lens at all?

Answer

The hood has peaks and valleys because the image is rectangular and thus has a wider field of view horizontally than vertically. The cutouts are needed to prevent the hood vignetting (casting shadows) in the corners.

Basically if you imagine a cone getting slowly wider, and then you punch the view frustum through it (to prevent any occlusion of light making up the image)

then you get the shape of a traditional "petal" lens hood.

The correct orientation is with the larger peaks at the top and bottom and the smaller peaks at the side.

You tend to see petal shaped hoods more on zooms and wide angle lenses. The reason for this is that the petal shape is more efficient compared to a traditional round hood. On a wide lens a round hood would have to be very stubby to avoid getting in the way of the image, whereas a petal can extend into areas which don't affect the image to offer additional shading.

Zooms, even in the telephoto range (such as the 70-200) usually have petal hoods for the extra efficiency as the hood on a zoom has to be designed to accommodate the widest focal length. Generally you want the hood as tight as possible without getting in the way of the image, thus a hood designed for 70mm is not as useful when you're zoomed in to 200mm, here the extra shading of the petal design helps.

Prime lenses have hoods designed and optimised for a single focal length so they are as tight as possible, thus petal designs are often replaced by round hoods which are more compact and cheaper to make (unless they are really needed, in the case of wide primes).

Do I have the right lens hood for my Canon 1000D with EF-S 18-55mm kit lens?

Question

I'm starting into the realm of photography and learning about the various additions to cameras that assist in good photos.

I have the Canon EOS 1000d, I believe the Rebel in the US? It came with the stock lens EF-S 18-55mm. (Unfortunately at the time, I wasn't aware of "Image Stabilizer" so it's not an IS lens.)

So my question: I bought a petal lens hood from Amazon.co.uk as I couldn't find mention of a Canon one anywhere. Product is here.

Maybe I have the wrong one? When I attach it as tight as it will screw on, it rotates when focusing, so then I see the sides of the hood in photos. When it is perpendicular it seems fine and no shadowing.

I loosened it and can move it into position when focusing but it just seems to much hassle.

Maybe I'm using the clamp ring wrong.

What do you all think? At 6.99 pounds it isn't a complete loss if it is wrong.

The Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens has a rotating end, which is used for focusing (i'm sure you're aware of this). So a petal-based hood is definitely the wrong choice for this lens. That Amazon seller is marketing it wrongly, IMO.

You'll find that higher-end lenses have a fixed (rotationally speaking) end, and so can be used with a petal hood.

My advice would be to either find a non-petal hood, or to not use one at all.
