Why can't I view an edited image on my camera?

This question is an extension of How can I copy images to my camera for viewing?.

When I take a picture on my camera, edit it on my computer, and send it back to my camera, my camera cannot display the image. Why is this so?

This applies to many makes and models of cameras and appears to be related to the Exif data in the image file. Why does the camera need to be picky about the Exif data in the image? Is there a technical reason the Exif structures need to be in a certain format?

It depends on the camera but on the ones I tried it only partially works.

In particular my Fuji F300EXR shows the image with a 'Gift' icon, complete with ribbons :) and show the preview but zoom in or EXIF display is not possible.

The Sony I had (Don't remember the model HX-something) did not even like me renaming its own photos without modification! In this case there were plenty of non-image files and directories created by the camera, so I assume the camera has an index of photos, maybe even with the previews cached separately somewhere.

Some cameras do not like different EXIF but some use other data to index the card and if you put a photo that does not match, then is it simply not seen.

How can I make playback zoom start in small steps rather than going to 1:1 with Magic Lantern?

I just got a brand spanking new Canon 60D with the Magic Lantern custom firmware, and I love it except for one thing: when you are looking at the images you have taken, and you press the zoom button, it zooms in as far as possible. I assume this is probably 1:1.

When I press the zoom button, how can I get it to zoom to the least amount? I have looked in the manual and I can't find anything.

I’ve never experienced this problem with a 60D. The default behaviour (and the only behaviour I could see mentioned in the manual (page 196) is the exact opposite of what you are experiencing. A single press of the magnify button zooms in one step at a time until it reaches maximum zoom.

Some possible things to try:

• When you’re using liveview mode with manual focus, does the magnify button behave as expected?
• Is the magnify button a bit sticky (so being held down for too long when pressed)?
• You could also try resetting all of the camera settings to their defaults, which is available from one of the tools menus (page 51 of the manual). Note, I haven’t done this but it may also reset things like the current file number for pictures so I’d advise doing it with an empty memory card.

Why are the black parts of my photos flashing?

Recently I have borrowed my friend's SLR.

I don't know what settings I have changed.

When reviewing a photo, the black parts of the photo are highlighted (flashing) black/white every second.

The manufacturer of the camera is Olympus.

What is going on? How do I fix it?

Answer

You're in the mode of the camera where it shows you the over (or possibly under) exposed parts of your images. Its a useful mode, but if you'd like to exit, click the up or down arrow while you see that image to cycle through the viewing modes.
