What are the pros and cons of lab prints versus using a printer?

As newcomers to photography and printing we would like advice on the best way(s), regarding both quality and cost, of printing. In the main my wife is photographing birds and insects, so natural colour and clarity are paramount. I have had one recommendation to a previous question for a photo lab (Photobox), thanks James. I was just wondering if any one else can give me advise?

Jrista's article is an excellent explanation of the cost of making these prints. It's actually quite a bit cheaper than I'd expected.

I'm just starting to make my own prints using my new Canon Pixma Pro9000 printer. I must say the results are stunningly beautiful and pop out of the printer with very little effort once I figured out how to load the paper.

Here are a couple of notes on cost that are worth noting.

First, if you are willing to settle for the Pro9000 instead of the Pro9500, it can be had very inexpensively if you check the "used" area of Amazon. Just look for the Pro9000 in Amazon and note the "new and used from $199" part of the page.

What you will find is that there is a whole secondary market in these machines thanks to the $400 rebate provided with the purchase of the printer with a new Canon DSLR. It turns out a lot of people want these rebates and then resell the printers once the rebates are collected. So even if you are a Nikon shooter like me, you can easily buy these printers for about $250 delivered. This makes the Pro9000, in my opinion, an unbeatable deal for anyone who has even a marginal desire to own a great photo printer.

A major benefit of printer ownership is that the marginal cost of making a print goes way down. Take Jrista's example of someone who buys the printer and uses it once a month. His first print, including the monthly amortization of the printer cost, costs $10 (if we count the printer as costing $250 instead of $700+ as in his example). But any subsequent print he wants to make costs only about $6 ($3 for paper and $2.80 for ink). A print from a lab will cost about $13, so he is actually paying much less than what a lab would cost, as long as he makes at least one print a month.

A reasonable scenerio in my case might be to give prints as Christmas gifts to ten of my friends, and then printing one print a month for the rest of the year. This would mean I would make about 22 prints in a year. If I amortize my printer over three years, that's $83 a year, plus $127 for making the 22 prints. So it costs me a bit over $200 a year, or less than $10 per print. This is considerably cheaper than a photo lab, and my prints come out of the printer instantly, which is partiuclarly useful during the Christmas season when photo labs are bound to be very busy and thus slow.

One really interesting consequence of purchasing your printer is that you should really act as though the printer didn't cost anything at all when making your calculations. Why? Because you should encourage yourself to make prints whenever you have even the slightest desire for them.

The reason for this is that if you leave your printer idle for long periods, you are risking ink clogging, which uses a lot of ink to resolve. You would be better off using this ink to make prints! Unless you are printing photos for a living, it's highly unlikely that you can overload your printer's duty cycle.

So don't say your print cost $10 including the cost of the printer. Say it costs under $6, and make as many prints as you would want to have at that price.

Incidentally, I found Canon's Photo Paper Platinum at $12.99 per 10 sheets, including shipping. So my paper costs about $1.30 and my ink (presumably from his example) around $2.80. So my 13x19 print costs only about $4.10. Your mileage may vary, as always, but look around for deals and you may find photo printing considerably cheaper than you might think.

Why do my prints look different from what I see on my computer monitor?

I haven't printed any of my photos yet but I decided to give it a try. I am thinking of getting a printer of my own but before that I wanted to see how they would look. So, I simply printed one at the office in the regular laser printer.

To my surprise the printed picture looked very different from what I see in the computer monitor. Can anyone tell me how can the colors look so different? Basically, they have lost their saturation and in some cases the yellows are orange etc. Also, do I need to look for anything in particular in a printer that I am planning to buy? Are printers for photographs different from regular printers?

Color laser printers, especially the big high end office printers, have the color capabilities you need for printing the company logo and the occasional Excel pie chart — but they are truly bad for printing photos.

But the good news is that almost any of the current generation of ink jet printers, even the cheap ones, are pretty good at printing photos - but only if you print in the printer's high quality setting on photo paper, if you use the cheap office paper you will get the same desaturated colors you got at the office.

Now, the colors in print will never be the same as on screen, especially the brightness (because the screen is a light source and he paper isn't) but you can get good results results, here are the options depending on how accurate you want the colors to be:

1. Just print in high quality on photo paper

If you like the way colors look an screen right out of camera and you never calibrated your screen than it's likely you won't notice the problem from uncalibrated printer (but it will never be the same as on screen).

This should be good enough for most people and will probably match the results you get when you get the photos printed in cheap labs.

2. Calibrate your monitor

If you're serious about getting the right colors you first need to make sure what you see on screen is really what's in the file, this will probably get you predictable results (that is, the difference between screen and printer will be predictable and you can learn to compensate).

There are several systems that will let you calibrate monitors, some are not very expensive.

This should be enough for most serious hobbyists and pros

3. Use name brand paper that has profiles available

The next step is to use good paper and get printer profiles for that paper you are using.

4. Calibrate your printer

The next step is to get a device that can calibrate both your screen and your specific printer with the specific printer you are using.

Those are definitely not cheap and this should be good enough for everyone.

5. Know when to stop

This rabbit hole goes very deep, if you want truly accurate color you might find yourself in a black shirt (to avoid reflection) in a room with gray walls and special balanced lights (to avoid color casts) manually adjusting color space conversions.

What should I select for my first photo printer?

I want to buy my first photo printer. Here is the situation:

  • I am an amateur, I do not take pictures to sell them, so printer will be only for my personal use and to display the photos on my walls

  • this will be my first such printer, so I do not know much how the output will look and do not know much about ICC etc., but I work in computer industry, so quite easy to learn for me

  • I have a Nikon D7000 SLR, I am using SLR cameras for more than 10 years

  • I would like to print both color and B/W, I took quite much B/W shoots on film before

  • I will print probably 2-3 photos per week on average, so I do not need to think much about ink costs

  • I will only use original inks

  • I will not print more bigger than A3 surely

I did some research for a week on internet and I have limited my options to R2000, R2880, R3000 and pro9500mk2. Considering the price for each here R2000=1k money, R2880 and pro9500=1.5k money and R3000=2k money, which one would you recommend for me to buy ?

First off, given the printers you have narrowed your options down to (not sure why the R2000 is in there...that one is pretty old and uses much older ink technology...I wouldn't even consider it an option myself), you really will need to learn a bit about ICM and how to use ICC profiles. Its pretty much an essential component of printing properly on any one of those printers, as without at least some attention given to ICM, your prints are unlikely to look correct. Most printers built-in color management are designed for the average user who really wouldn't know the difference, however a photographer, even someone who only prints as a hobby for themselves, WILL certainly see the difference.

Second, you mentioned you want to print black and white. That right there may be the deciding factor. I personally would own an Epson printer right now if it was not for how they deal with black ink in their mid-grade printers (Epson flushes the black ink channel if you switch from photo to matte or back, wasting a lot of ink or time. Note, this may have changed with the R3000...I have not used that particular printer myself.) I own a Canon PIXMA Pro 9500 Mk II right now for its dual photo and matt black ink channels, and the lack of needing to flush and switch from photo black to matte black when you decide to change paper types like Epson printers to. If you are like me, and want to get the most out of your black and white prints, you will want to use the paper that fits the photo. Glossy papers tend to have a higher dMax, which leads to a broader tonal range that can really make black and white prints stand out. On the other hand, sometimes a nice soft fine-art matte paper can bring just the right kind of character to a black and white print, at the cost of some tonal range. I personally like to use both glossy and matte, and in that area, the Canon 9500 II can't be beat...it supports both types of black ink as well as a gray ink simultaneously on their own ink channels, so there is no need to flush and waste ink to switch from one black ink type to the other.

Regarding ink usage. If you can maintain a print rate of 2-3 prints a week, you should be fine with any one of those printers. However if you slow to only printing once every month or less, you might find that you have dried ink problems with any one of them, including the Canon. All four of those printers use pigment inks, and unlike dye ink printers, regular usage of the printer is essential to avoid dried pigment and either a considerable waste and a lot of cleaning time each time you print, or possibly even clogged print heads that can be very difficult to clean or even require replacement.

Finally, if you are willing to spend the money on the R3000, you might also want to consider the brand new Canon Pixma Pro-1 12-ink printer. It was just released in November at a price of $999, and is the successor to the Canon Pixma Pro 9500 Mark II. It contains five separate grayscale inks (in addition to the full compliment of color inks), including the photo and matte black, as well as dark, medium, and light grays. For grayscale printing, I would expect it to produce the finest tonal grades of any current pigment based inkjet printer. It also uses MUCH larger ink tanks, which could be a blessing and huge money saver (if you print a lot) or a curse (if you print very seldom, as you might end up wasting even more money due to dried ink and unrecoverable cartridges.) At its price point, its a direct competitor to the Epson R3000, and offers up just as much in the way of quality, print longevity, etc.

Outside of that, I can't really tell you which printer to get. You have to make that determination on your own, based on what your goals are and how much you want to spend.
